W.H.O. Awards Education/Literacy Grants
The W.H.O. (Women Helping Others) Foundation awards $53,000 to 13 non-profit organizations serving women, children and families in need. Congratulations to all these deserving recipients.
Reading is Fundamental of Southern California (CA) $5,000
This grant will allow them to buy 8,649 books for 2,883 low-income children.
4 Children’s S.A.K.E. (Supporting Abused Kids Everywhere) (FL) $3,000
This grant will be used to purchase specialized literacy materials for disabled children being cared for in hospital and hospice situations.
This is ME, Inc. (IL) $3,200
They will use their W.H.O. grant to improve their drop-in library and Science Workshop.
Roaring Fork Valley Early Learning Fund (CO) $5,000
Funds will help provide a Reader Book Bag for children under six years old as well as parent literacy education materials to help reinforce the benefits of reading.
The Sunshine Foundation, Inc. (LA) $5,000
W.H.O. funds will enable them to provide 4,000 copies of You Are Sunshine to low-income children.
Loudon Literacy Council, Inc. (VA) $3,000
Their W.H.O. grant will enable them to purchase baby board books for their Baby Book Bundles which will be used at Head Start programs and in their Sweet Dreams shelter program.
Foundation for the Education of Young Women (TX) $5,000
This grant will serve low-income students in an all-girls school through their International Book Club, which exposes students to various cultures and countries.
Freedom School Partners (NC) $5,000
Because of the W.H.O. grant, children in this program will have an opportunity to choose books around the theme of “I Can & Must Make A Difference.”
Volunteer Services of Manatee County, Inc. (FL) $4,500
Through their W.H.O. grant, they will serve low-income 1st and 2nd grade children in the Books & Birthdays program, with the help of the youth in their ManaTEENs program. In addition, they will provide 500 children with a book of their own.
Tree House Books (PA) $4,000
Funds will help support their free after-school program that serves low-income children in a very depressed area of Philadelphia.
Attitudes & Attire (TX) $5,000
This organizations's goal is to help struggling women who are trying get back in the workplace and become self-sufficient. W.H.O. funds will help by providing workbooks for the education portion of their program.
Everybody Wins! South Florida (FL) $4,100
They will use their grant to purchase books and related items for their Power Lunch literacy program for at-risk 2nd and 3rd graders.
Read Seed, Inc. (NC) $1,200
This W.H.O. grant is for books for their summer program that will serve 1,175 low income children.
